Q: How often is the eye removed?
A: Removing the eye once or twice a month for cleaning and checking. There may be instances where the eye must be removed daily for cleaning. Your doctor or Anaplastologist will tailor specific care instructions if needed.
The eye may be worn day and night. The less handling, the better. Only in rare cases the eye may be removed at night. In this event it should be stored in saline solution to keep the eye moist.
Q: How often do you clean the socket?
A: Your doctor will recommend any socket solution, which may be necessary. In general, once the socket is completely healed, it will take care of itself.
Q: How do you insert/remove the eye?
A: Your doctor or Anaplastologist will show you the best method for inserting and removing your eye. Typically for inserting the eye you:
- ) Lift the upper eyelid with the thumb or the left hand
- ) Hold the eye as shown by using your right hand and slide it under the upper lid as far as possible.
- ) Depress the lower lid so as to allow the eye to slip into the socket.
- ) Insert the eye wet
Reminder: Always scrub your hands thoroughly before handling the eye
Removing the Eye:
Depress the lower lid so that the lower edge of the eye slides out and down. A suction cup may be used to hold the eye, or you may allow the eye to drop into your hand.
