Creating a Maxillofacial Prosthetic
The custom making of the prosthetic begins with an impression of the affected area. Then a stonecast is made of the defect and sculpted in wax to match the existing tissue. For instance, if a nose needs to be made, a past picture of the patient is very helpful to determine the correct shape. A second mold is made of the sculpture and then a medical grade silicon is incorporated with oil paints to match the skin colors.
The final fitting for the prosthetic is placed on the patient and surfaced tint is done. The prosthetic is held by a medical adhesive or in place by a high tech magnet system or the Vistafix Facial Prosthetic Retention System. The Vistafix system is probably the best one to be used, but requires that the surgeon work in association with the specialists of our clinic.
